British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels down to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he added. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
