Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
