Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.

The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials state preliminary tests show the fluid was likely human blood.

"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they commented.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to solve the case" and have appealed to the public for details.

A senior political figure said the attack left him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
